3. Thomas E. Beslow, From the Darkness of Africa to the Light of America: The Story of an African Prince (Boston: T. W. Ripley, 1890). (126 p.)
Autobiography of a native of Africa who immigrated to the United States following his conversion to Christianity. Approximately half of the monograph deals with memories of his life in Upper Guinea. The second half deals with his attempts to adjust to life in America and his efforts to obtain an education. A printed copy of an undated petition to the United States Congress urging the emancipation of slaves in the District of Columbia has been folded and inserted in the monograph. The petition does not have an obvious connection to the monograph.
