Whole issue of “an illustrated monthly, devoted to literature, science, music, art, religion, facts, fiction and traditions of the Negro race.” The magazine is illustrated with photographs and displays advertisements in the front and back. S. C. Cross examines the question why slavery prospered in the Southern states as compared to its extinction in the North. He considers and dismisses economic and climatic explanations and focuses instead on the cultural differences between the two sections.
