7. The Colored American Magazine 10 (April 1906): 221-292.

Whole issue of a monthly magazine for African Americans. This issue contains an article entitled “Football: Its Defenders and Champions” by Phil Waters. “Men have always admired a man, and all the world knows that it is only real, virile men who can succeed at Football. For this reasons, where there are colored students they invariably win honor and fame, not only in the intercollegiate debates and oratorical contests, but in the strenuous athletic battles, particularly football, some hero in ebony is continually bursting forth as a star of the first magnitude. The season of 1905 was no exception, and for the benefit of the many readers of The Colored American Magazine, we present the portraits of four of the most brilliant students, athletes and men attending any of the great colleges, with a brief sketch of all.” They include Robert H. Marshall of the University of Minnesota, Roy M. Young of the University of Illinois, Ted Green of Western Reserve University, and William N. Johnson of the University of Nebraska. Photographs of three of these men in uniform appear with the article. A photograph of the fourth player, Young of Illinois, appears as the issue’s frontispiece. This issue also has an article about The Utica Normal and Industrial Institute in Utica, Mississippi. The article is illustrated with nine photographs, one of which is a portrait of W. H. Holtzclaw, the Institute’s principal. The other photographs show buildings as well as students and faculty engaged in daily school activities.
