Speech at a “peace convention” called by Virginia before she seceded, in which the speaker argues that although slavery would be allowed to continue in states where it currently existed, but that he would not tolerate its extension into new states being formed in western territories. There is a brief appendix entitled, “The Insufferable Iniquity and Abomination of Slavery,” which emphasizes the unacceptability of introducing slavery to territories that were currently free.
