Stone Collection: Volume 92 - Item 24
24. U.S., Bureau of Education, Education and Crime, chap. 28 in The Report of the Commissioner of Education for 1898-99 (Washington, DC: Government Printing Office, 1900). (96 p.)
Study of the relationship between education and crime concluding that increasing the educational level of a group reduces the rate of crime in that group. Apparently, Mr. Stone has marked a section that discusses an article from the North American Review in which the author, Rebecca Harding Davis, “attempts to prove that education has served to increase the amount of crime.” The monograph contains eleven tables regarding education and crime gleaned from the 1890 census.
