Joel Joshua Halbert
Eugene Halbert (1857-1901), the son of J. J. Halbert, married Arkansas native Lou Terrell (1859-1901) in Mississippi around 1882. The Halberts were living in Grenada, Grenada County, Mississippi, by 1900. Eugene Halbert was employed as a railway-express agent. The Halberts had several children, including Marie (1883-1977), Fannie (1885-1927), Eugenia (1888-1965), William Judson (1892-1945), and Joel Joshua. Marie Halbert later married Thomas Edgar Granberry (1871-1931).

Alonzo Gustavus Mayers
Alonzo Gustavus Mayers was born in Winchester, Wayne County, Mississippi, on March 6, 1821. He was the son of James Mayers (1797-1834) of Richmond, Virginia, and Jane Cole Mayers. James Mayers was judge advocate of the Eleventh Regiment, Mississippi Militia, in 1831, and he was sheriff of Wayne County in 1832.

Biography/History:
Little is known about Joseph M. Cush, the author of the letter in this collection. At the time the letter was written, Cush was apparently living at "Campus, Miss." It is also possible that Cush was originally from, or later lived in Bogalusa, Washington Parish, Louisiana, as indicated by an annotation in pencil on the verso of the letter.

Downs Family
Henry Douglas Downs settled with his wife, Mary Napier Downs, on a plantation belonging to his father, William Downs, in Claiborne and Warren counties in Mississippi in 1798. Their son, Alfred Claiborne Downs, was born on May 16, 1802.
