Elijah Fleming Papers (Z/2315)

Biography/History:

Elijah Fleming was born near Camden, Madison County, Mississippi, on June 4, 1839. He was the second of eight children of Robert Boyd Walker Fleming, a planter, and Armadilla Ross Fleming. Robert Fleming owned a plantation in northern Madison County, in the area that would later become known as Cameron, a few miles northwest of Camden. In 1860, he owned $24,750 worth of real estate.

This collection consists of correspondence; newspaper and magazine articles; biographical information; sheet music; concert programs and flyers; promotional posters, brochures, and announcements; music sales information; album covers; and other miscellaneous materials related to the career of African-American classical composer William Grant Still, who was born in Woodville, Wilkinson County, Mississippi.

Byron M. Baer Freedom Riders Collection (Z/2309)

This collection of Byron M. Baer contains correspondence, notes, publicity flyers, scrapbook pages, newsclippings, and other materials concerning the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the 1961 Freedom Rides to Jackson, Mississippi. Most of the materials relate to Baer’s experience as a Freedom Rider and his resulting imprisonment in the Mississippi State Penitentiary (Parchman Farm). Of particular interest are correspondence sent by Baer and other Freedom Riders during their imprisonment, and daily notes written by Baer on tissue during his time at Parchman.
