Maude C. (Newton) Simmons
Maude C. (Newton) Simmons was born in Arkansas around 1885. She was the daughter of Minnie A. Newton of Mississippi. The Simmons family was living in Drew, Sunflower County, Mississippi, after 1903. Maude Newton Simmons was a widow and again living with her mother by 1920. Minnie A. Newton was also widowed by that time, and her son, Wallace D. Newton, was farming near Drew.

Biography/History:
The New Hope Baptist Church is located in Foxworth, Marion County, Mississippi. The church became a member of the Pearl River Baptist Association in 1872, and it later became a member of the Marion County Baptist Association in 1920. The New Hope Baptist Church had 419 members in 1949, and it was still in existence in 2001.

Annie Keith Frazier, daughter of Tennessee governor and United States senator James Beriah Frazier and Louise Douglas Keith Frazier, was born in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee, on May 14, 1887. She married Robert Nugent Somerville on November 20, 1912.

Biography/History:
The creator of this mercantile ledger is unknown. However, the headings at the top of each page place the owner in Canton, Madison County, Mississippi. A name penciled on the inside back cover suggests that the ledger may have once belonged to John G. Powell. Local government records indicate there was a John G. Powell who owned and operated a plantation in Madison County between 1855 and 1860.
