SHINGLEUR (ELVIRA FLEWELLEN) LETTERS


Family letters of Elvie Flewellen of Wymton, Georgia, who married Lt. J. A. Shingleur in the fall of 1861. Includes eighteen letters from Lt. Shingleur who was serving in the Columbus City Light Rifles and stationed in Virginia. Other letters are from her mother, her sister Lizzie, cousin Julia, cousin William, brother Hugh, and Aunt Lea Harris. Of especial interest is Lt. Shingleur's description of the "rifle cannon" shell in his letter of June 17, 1861.

Scope and Content Note:

Papers of Thomas H. Shields, who was born at Rokeby, near Natchez, on March 20, 1865, and died at Jackson on February 23, 1948. Captain Shields served during the War with Spain as captain of Company A, First Mississippi Volunteer Infantry, and was a charter member and organizer of the Harry C. Marshall Camp, Spanish War Veterans. Captain Shields was closely identified with the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Mississippi, and was executive secretary of the Diocese for 25 years.

Sessions, who was born in Franklin County in 1838 and who served as first lieutenant and captain of Company K (Quitman Rifles), Seventh Regiment of Mississippi Infantry, CSA, and later as captain of Company F and of Company B and major in Colonel Frank P. Powers' Regiment of Louisiana and Mississippi Cavalry.
